Debut EP “Conditioned Pt. 1” Out Now!
Today, the Amsterdam-based modern metal band Gallamesh unleashes ‘Conditioned Pt. 1’. A captivating debut EP that boasts a powerful modern sound and groove, featuring tracks that are irresistibly addictive.
Gallamesh takes their influences from metalcore, hardcore punk and modern death-metal, blending the big riffs of Chimaira, the vocals of Lamb of God and the chugs of Kublai Khan TX. For Gallamesh, it’s all about their high-energy live performances, bringing the intensity, getting sweaty, and leaving stages in ruins.
The band’s debut EP tackles socially relevant themes, reflecting on the human condition and societal structures. “‘Conditioned’ is about becoming aware of the patterns we gradually and (in)voluntarily fall into,” singer/lyricist Kees explains. “Why do I feel like I’m losing something by letting go? Why do I feel like I need to be comfortable? Why do I feel like I should be masculine? What makes me think I’m doing better than my father? ‘Conditioned’ is about dismantling triggers and conditioned thoughts. It’s about trying to reconstruct them into something a bit more flexible – and a lot more empathetic.”
‘Misogyny’ delves into gender inequality and the systemic repression of women, highlighting the absurdity and harm of a society that subjects women to daily injustices. “Just like all other institutionalised ways of repressing someone we are afraid of – because it may be possible that they hold a better way of looking at things – misogyny is a tumour eating away at modern-day human society,” Kees elaborates. “Men keep imposing their male fragility on each other, repeating the same bullshit.” The song’s lyrics poignantly express this frustration: “Let the crust of the earth / Swallow all this bullshit.”
‘Servants of Ira’ – inspired by Buddhist teachings – paints a vivid picture of an anger-eating demon named Ira, serving as a metaphor for how harbouring anger and hatred can feed destructive forces within society, while choosing love can starve these negative impulses. The debut single ‘Stingrays’ addresses the complex process of letting go and the pain that accompanies it. It challenges listeners to confront the self-deceptive stories we tell ourselves to avoid uncomfortable truths. ‘Comfort Culture’ critiques modern reliance on technological efficiency at the expense of mental and physical vitality, warning against a lifestyle that prioritizes ease over genuine human effort and engagement.
The recordings and mixing of the debut single were mainly handled by the band’s guitarist Jeroen, who built his own studio during the pandemic. Drums were recorded at Springtone Sound in Amsterdam, and to add some extra ears and a fresh perspective, mastering was outsourced to Daan Nieboer (Cornerstone Audio). Jeroen elaborates, “The tracks are mixed by me, incorporating feedback from the rest of the guys. Having control over the recording and mixing is super satisfying, and I love how easy it is to get together to record new ideas,” the band’s guitarist/producer explains. “Doing it ourselves means we can go from brainstorming a tune to dropping the actual song in no time.” Sounds like ‘Conditioned Pt. 1’ is just the beginning, and we won’t have to wait long for ‘Conditioned Pt. 2’ to follow. Get ready!
